My site is down

Visitors cannot reach your site, or see an error. Work through these four causes in order.

Start by opening the site yourself, in a private window so you are not seeing a cached version.

1. Is it in maintenance mode or suspended?#

Both take a site off the air on purpose, and both are easy to leave on by accident. Check the site page first: it is the fastest thing to rule out and the most common cause.

2. Did something change just before it broke?#

The activity feed lists what happened and when. A plugin installed, a PHP version changed or a restore run shortly before the problem started is very likely the cause. Undo that one thing rather than several at once.

3. Is it the domain rather than the site?#

Try your Sitebefy subdomain. If the site loads there but not on your own domain, the site is fine and the problem is DNS. The domain troubleshooting document covers that.

4. Restore a backup#

If you cannot find the cause and the site was working yesterday, restore the most recent backup from before it broke. Take a fresh backup first so this remains reversible.

Restoring discards newer work

Everything done after that backup is lost. Take a backup of the broken state first, so you can come back to it if the restore turns out not to be the answer.
