An AI website builder takes a plain description of a business and produces a working website from it: the page structure, the layout, the copy, and the images, assembled in one pass instead of picked out of a menu. You type "a two-person law practice in Manchester specialising in employment cases", wait a few minutes, and there is a site to look at.
That is a genuinely new way to start a website, and it is also one of the most oversold phrases in software right now. Plenty of products use the label for something much narrower. This guide covers what the term actually means, what the technology is good and bad at today, how to tell a useful tool from a good demo, and who the approach suits.
What an AI website builder actually does#
Strip away the marketing and a real AI website builder does three jobs that used to be separate, and does them together:
- Decides the structure.Which pages a site like yours needs, and what belongs on each one. A restaurant needs a menu and opening hours; a consultancy needs services and case studies.
- Writes the copy.Headlines, section text, service descriptions and calls to action written for your business, rather than placeholder text you have to replace before launch.
- Assembles the design.Layout, spacing, type and imagery chosen to fit the content, instead of the content being poured into a fixed frame and hoping it fits.
The third one is what separates the category from everything before it. A tool that writes copy into a template you picked yourself is an AI writing assistant with a template library attached. Useful, but a different product. In a real AI website builder, structure and content are decided together, so a section only exists if there is something real to put in it.
Some tools generate a design mockup you then rebuild somewhere else. Some generate a site that only lives inside their own platform. Some generate a real installation of an open platform such asWordPress. All three get sold under the same three words, and the difference matters most on the day you want to move.
